VICOTRA is a project of the Internet Media Group of the Politecnico di Torino/IEIIT-CNR, supported in
part by Turin's Center for Wireless Multimedia Communications ( CERCOM).
VICOTRA was launched in 2001 based on an idea by Juan Carlos De Martin (IEIIT-CNR/CERCOM). The project aims at creating
a DSP-based system capable of real-time acquisition, coding, transmission, error concealment, decoding and display of
digital video sequences. Usually, only one or few modules are implemented and studied. Implementing the whole system from acquisition to final display enables a better
analysis of system level issues and a deeper understanding of the effects of design decisions on the final perceptual
video quality. A real-time such system, besides its clear appeal as demonstrator and as educational tool, has also the
important advantage of shortening design and evaluation.
Coding is performed according to the ISO MPEG-2 video standard. The output bitstream is packetized
and then submitted to the channel simulator, running on the host
PC. The parameters of the channel simulator are set using a simple graphical user interface. The focus is on
wireless-packet scenarios.
Packet losses, delay and jitter information generated by the simulator are applied to the video
packets and then fed to the input buffer of the video decoder.
After playout buffering, error concealment are applied to mask packet losses. Video decoding are then
performed, with output to an external monitor for display
and evaluation. Channel statistics and objective performance metrics (e.g., MSE, PSNR) are also displayed.
